28VDC Ground Power Unit
Unitron Power Systems and FoxCart 28VDC ground power supply units provide continuous output power for your aircraft from a wide-range of power input levels and can run from 50 or 60Hz sources. The units are available in lightweight mobile or fixed configurations, suitable for either hangar or ramp use. Unitron’s 28VDC GPUs are also used in the design of electrical distribution systems for large civilian and military ships to supply power to the helicopter deck.
NEC 18" Rule: There is the well known “18in rule” that requires there be no electrical connection allowed within the 18in area above the hangar floor known as a Class 1, Division 2 area. This area is considered hazardous because fumes from spilled jet fuel may not have yet dispersed sufficiently to avoid ignition were an arch to occur; in this context, from a loose electrical connection within a mobile power unit (GPU or cart). For a more thorough explanation of this ruling, one can reference Article 513 of the NEC and IEC 60079-10-1 of the European Standard as well as the article available in the below downloads.

Frequently Asked Questions About 28VDC GPUs
-
When should I choose a 28 VDC GPU?
Choose a 28 VDC GPU when the aircraft requires 28 VDC external power for avionics, maintenance, battery support, or engine start assistance. 28 VDC GPUs are commonly used with legacy helicopters, turboprops, business aircraft, regional aircraft, and many military aircraft applications.
-
What aircraft ground power products does Unitron manufacture?
Unitron manufactures solid-state aircraft ground power systems, including 400 Hz AC frequency converters, 28 VDC ground power units, 270 VDC aircraft power supplies, combination AC/DC ground power units, onboard frequency converters, cable handling systems, remote control accessories, and related aircraft ground power accessories.
-
Are Unitron GPUs available as mobile, towable, fixed, or bridge-mounted units?
Yes. Unitron aircraft ground power units are available in multiple configurations depending on the product family and use application. Common configurations include mobile, towable, fixed, and bridge-mounted units for hangars, ramps, flight lines, boarding bridges, and maintenance facilities.
-
What GPU configuration is best for a hangar?
For hangars, the best GPU configuration depends on aircraft type, output power, cable length, safety requirements, and how often the aircraft position is used. Fixed or bridge-mounted GPUs are preferred for dedicated maintenance bays, while mobile or towable GPUs are preferred when the same unit must be relocatable to serve multiple aircraft positions.
-
What is the difference between a mobile GPU and a fixed GPU?
A mobile GPU is mounted on wheels, a cart, or a towable frame so it can be moved around the ramp, hangar, or flight line. A fixed GPU is permanently installed in a hangar, gate, bridge, or facility location. Mobile GPUs are best for flexible operations, while fixed GPUs are best for repeated use at a dedicated aircraft parking or maintenance position.
-
What GPU configuration is best for ramp or flight line use?
For ramp and flight line use, mobile or towable GPUs are often preferred because they can be positioned close to the aircraft. A mobile GPU gives ground crews flexibility when aircraft parking positions change or when one power unit must support multiple aircraft over time.
